The Union – Elton JohnView More By Elton John Our ReviewLeon Russell was an early inspiration for Elton John and John had opened for Russell in the early days. But fortunes flipped and John went on to superstardom while Russell kept on keeping on his own road of smaller clubs and selective audiences. Together, some forty years later, they sound as if they had been meant to play together. “If It Wasn’t for Bad” is a solid piece of no-nonsense road music, strong beats and harder voices coming together with a sense of mastery and experience. “Eight Hundred Dollar Shoes” plays with even more legacy under its piano weight, as it turns and looks at past success in all its faded glory. “Hey Ahab” struts with a renewed sense of the world. “Gone to Shiloh” settles in with a touching, emotive pull as it spills over the Civil War. “Jimmie Rodgers’ Dream” remembers a long-lost country legend, the Singing Brakeman. “The Best Part of the Day” brings out a classic modern country sound. “When Love Is Dying” throws the two singers into sweet relief, with Brian Wilson’s choral arrangement adding the heavenly touch.. Customer ReviewsLeon Should be in Rock Hall of Fame (5 stars)Read the reviews and nearly all mention Elton first and foremost, deservedly so. Those of us who have followed Leon from the very beginning know how great his talent is and, although perhaps not as commercially successful, stands up in every way to Elton as an equal. I'm thankful that Elton is using some of his stature and position to bring Leon into the light for many who will hopefully discover ALL the treasures he's brought us through good god the ray of light between the clouds is finally here (5 stars) A must buy for any fan of music...no auto-tuning and few adornments of any kind thanks to T.Bone. I've loved Elton's particular brand of pop-rock for 40+ albums now but this is a nice departure to team up with Leon Russell. Neither one is 25 anymore and neither cares to even pretend they will get lots of radio play with new stuff but the album will very likely end up as one of 2010's most revered works due to some really masterful piano pl A Stunning Modern Masterpiece!!! (5 stars) This album exhibits a sound no longer heard from today's modern artists. The combination of the Blues, gospel, and unbeatable piano performances from Elton John and Leon Russell prove that fine music can actually still be written, produced, and performed today. The wicked piano licks even exceed what Elton's done in recent memory. This isn't a pop album. This isn't a rock album. THIS IS A MASTERPIECE!!!!!
