That Lonesome Song – Jamey JohnsonOur Review“Tour de force” might sound like a highfalutin phrase to apply to a hard country album, but it definitely fits Jamey Johnson’s That Lonesome Song. This gruff-voiced Alabama native is the genuine article: a tough-as-nails ex-Marine who writes and sings songs of remarkable intimacy and even tenderness. Comparisons with Waylon Jennings are unavoidable; tunes like “The Door is Always Open,” “Women,” and “High Cost of Living” invoke the battered romanticism of Waylon’s ‘70s heyday. But Johnson is far more than your garden-variety outlaw. There’s a keen-eyed intelligence to his songwriting and a working-class veracity to his vocals that lift him beyond the generic. Especially fine are “In Color” (an unsparing look at the not-so good old days), “Mary Go Round” (a quietly tragic portrait of love gone wrong), and “The Last Cowboy” (a toast to vanishing heroes). Johnson can get gritty with the best of them, as the mud-caked “Mowin’ Down the Roses” shows. But he truly excels at haunting, pain-wracked ballads — “Angel” and especially “Dreaming My Dreams with You” are powerful, unsettling stuff. A work of bruised, hardscrabble beauty, Johnson’s Lonesome Song deserves to win him many admirers.Customer ReviewsJamey Johnson is our hillbilly savior! (5 stars)This album is awesome. No disrespect to Taylor Swift, Rascall Flatts, Sugarland, etc., but traditional Country music has not been represented enough here lately out of Nashville. The core Country audience of 20-30 years ago has had very few artists that they relate to anymore. Jamey's album is an encouraging sign. Not only do I love it because it is old school, but the songs are honest, sincere, and well composed. His songs speak the TR Album of the year!! (5 stars) Let me start by saying... I've never been compelled to write a review or opinion on any of the music I own (and I own alot) until now.I'm usually not impressed ....But WOW! This is the BEST pure country,if not the best music i have ever heard! REALLY!! Brilliant song writing and singing from ths guy. I still have chills from this album which I think is a masterpiece from top to bottom.I cant review each song . Buy it! Play it! Turn it up a A classic! (5 stars) This is a classic album. Every song is a gem. Jamey Johnson is a mixture of George Jones, John Michael Montgomery & Jeff Bates. This is a classic country album that will have you hypnotized! Just BRILLIANT!!! BiographyBorn: July 14, 1975 in Enterprise, ALGenre: Country Years Active: '00s, '10s Singer/songwriter Jamey Johnson is just as comfortable mopping up the tears on the barroom floor with an old Hank Williams-style ballad as he is tearing the roof off with a honky tonk juggernaut. The Alabama native and former Marine rose to the top of the Nashville food chain through blood, sweat, and tears. Being raised in a devout and deeply musical family helped the new traditionalist find his voice, but it wasn't until he moved to Music City that the world began to take notice. After laying low...
