Our Review

The Clash’s third album, 1979’s London Calling, is where their brilliance comes together in a 19-track tour de force that uses the energy of their punk origins and employs it in a number of new stylistic directions. Reggae-dub underlines “Rudie Can’t Fail,” “Wrong ‘Em Boyo,” “Revolution Rock” and bassist Paul Simonon’s unnerving “The Guns of Brixton.” Rockabilly and surf chase the cover of Vince Taylor’s “Brand New Cadillac.” Genuine pop melodies support the Mick Jones-led “Spanish Bombs,” “Lost In the Supermarket,” “I’m Not Down” and the hit-single-in-hiding “Train In Vain” (original copies of the album didn’t list it on the album sleeve). The 30th Anniversary Edition, like the 25th before it, includes previously unreleased tracks, “The Vanilla Tapes,” that range from worktapes (“Koka Kola”) to valuable demos (“Rudie Can’t Fail,” “Death of Glory”), instrumentals (an early version of “Brixton” as “Paul’s Tune,” an early version of “The Right Profile” as “Up-Toon”) and other previously unreleased treasures (Bob Dylan’s “The Man In Me”), plus videos of the “Making of the Album” by film director Don Letts.

Turning Rebellion Into Money... (1 star)
Genius music repackaged and churned out yet again. You could just peel off the "30th Anniversary" sticker and put it on your "25th Anniversary" edition. I'd like to think that old Joe would be appalled.

turning rebellion into money? (5 stars)
This is great music that should be re-introduced to the younger generation. Incidentally, we all grew up at some point and realized that $ is an inescapable reality. You've heard of royalties, right? The message is still anarchy, even if many people are pickin up paycheques!

london calling or debut album (5 stars)
london calling is a great album but their best album is their first, selftitled debut album.
there is not one of mick jones stupid pop songs like train in vain or should i stay or should i go. its straight punk rock which is what the clash do best.wheres the 30th anniversary for the debut album.

Biography

Formed: 1976 in London, England
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '70s, '80s

The Sex Pistols may have been the first British punk rock band, but the Clash were the definitive British punk rockers. Where the Pistols were nihilistic, the Clash were fiery and idealistic, charged with righteousness and a leftist political ideology. From the outset, the band was more musically adventurous, expanding its hard rock & roll with reggae, dub, and rockabilly among other roots musics. Furthermore, they were blessed with two exceptional songwriters in Joe Strummer and Mick Jones,...
